Since the beginning of the 1990s, many EU Directives and national laws have been developed set of objectives and strategy to enable proper management of all waste streams generated. Research and analysis of experiences in other countries, as well as the implementation of appropriate policies, can help Serbia to avoid certain mistakes and unnecessary investments related to waste management sector. For developing countries such as Serbia, the implementation of advanced technology is hard to attain, so landfills represent the optimal solution that will fulfill two main goals of solid waste management, that include protection of human health and protection of the environment. In other words, landfills are a sustainable long terms solution if the economy development is on a low level, and landfills represents solution that in a relatively short time and with less investment than advanced treatment facility can be adopted, and create basis for development of waste management systems.References
